Incoming Senior Fellowships
NINO welcomes scholars from around the world for a research stay of one to three months, and to engage with the academic community at NINO, Leiden University and other Dutch institutions (depending on fulfilment of required imbedding of the Fellow at the respective institution). With available funding, a stay of ca. four weeks in the Netherlands is possible. Should you wish to stay longer, please indicate which additional funds are available to you.
The Incoming Fellowship is fully funded (providing travel, accommodation, and visa, as needed) and includes a small budget for a research activity in form of a workshop, lecture series, master class or similar initiative organised by the Fellow during the stay.
When NINO acts as host, facilities and benefits provided during the Incoming Senior Fellowship include use of library resources, office, teaching and conference space at Leiden University, and opportunities to present research through lectures or printed publications. Facilities and benefits at other Dutch institutions are dependent on their provisions for international guests.
Outgoing Senior Fellowships
To scholars affiliated with Dutch universities, museums and institutes, NINO offers the opportunity of a research stay at a university, museum or institute abroad (depending on fulfilment of required imbedding of the Fellow at the respective institution). With available funding, a stay of one to three months is possible – depending on your destination. Please indicate any additional funds that are available to you, if applicable.
The Outgoing Fellowship covers the costs of travel, accommodation, and visa, and includes a small budget for a research activity in form of a workshop, lecture series, master class or similar initiative organised by the Fellow during the stay.
General
The applicant should propose a clearly outlined project to be undertaken during the Fellowship. A proposed collaboration with an ongoing project at the host institution, exchange within a network (esp. the Leiden-Birmingham Strategic Collaboration Fund) or study of collections and/or archival holdings should be outlined in the application.
The Fellow is expected to reside in close proximity to the host institution, and to actively participate in its academic life.

(*) Exact award dates are variable: they are dependent on the meeting dates of our Academic Committee. N.B.: Applications can be submitted until the budget is depleted.
Conditions and regulations in short
Applicants must be mid-career or senior researchers holding a PhD degree in a relevant field and be based outside the Netherlands (Incoming Fellowship) or in the Netherlands (Outgoing Fellowship).
N.B.: MA, PhD, or early postdoctoral students abroad may apply for an Incoming Mobility Grant; MA, PhD, or early postdoctoral students in the Netherlands may apply for an Outgoing Mobility Grant.
A Senior Fellowship cannot start retroactively, i.e. with a starting date earlier than the award date. Senior Fellowships are awarded for a period of 1 to 3 months. Travel dates should be clearly indicated in the application.
The applicant should make clear how their research project makes a contribution to Egyptology (including Coptology), Assyriology (including Hittitology), and/or Near Eastern archaeology.
Activities at universities, museums and/or other institutions relevant to the study of the Near East supported by the Fellowship include
- library and collections research;
- collaboration with a researcher or research team;
- exploratory meetings geared towards setting up new collaborations;
- joint publication or grant writing;
- organization or active participation at a conference or workshop.
Not covered are
- tourism;
- food and drink;
- per diem (daily allowance).

Successful applicants can apply for a new Senior Fellowship after five years from the date of their previous application.
Please note:
- NINO will prioritise applications by researchers and students who are not partipants in an existing larger research project – in other words, NINO does not aim to fund components of ongoing funded projects.
- Applicants are advised to verify that relevant institutions and/or scholars are willing to receive the Fellow. Detailed/fixed arrangements are to be made if and when a Senior Fellowship is awarded.
- Mention in your application any other relevant funds obtained or requested, including amounts, (prospective) subsidy givers, and status (applied, in process, awarded).
- Notify NINO immediately on decisions of other subsidy givers, and inform other (prospective) subsidy givers immediately of NINO’s decision on your application. Failure to notify NINO and/or other subsidy givers may result in retraction of awarded grants, awards, or funds.
