Facilities and benefits provided during the Visiting Fellow’s term include use of library resources at the NINO Near Eastern Library, use of Leiden University’s ICT services (free Wi-Fi; printing/scanning at one’s own expense), seminar and conference space as needed, office space or flexible work space upon request and based on availability, and opportunities to present research findings through lectures or printed publications, when possible and/or suitable.
NINO Visiting Fellowships are awarded for a period of max. 12 months.

Conditions and regulations
Applicants hold a PhD or equivalent degree at the time of their application and boast a publication track record commensurate to their career stage; their envisioned research project falls within NINO’s areas of interest.
Candidates are prepared to disseminate their project among the research community at NINO or another research institute in the Netherlands, e.g. in a masterclass or public lecture.
The applicant should make clear how their research project makes a contribution to Egyptology (including Coptology), Assyriology (including Hittitology), and/or Near Eastern archaeology.
Applications that propose collaborations with scholars in the Netherlands during and beyond the NINO Visiting Fellowship will be at an advantage.
Preference may be given to applicants who have not previously held a Visiting Fellowship at NINO.
Extensions/renewals
Towards the end date of their term, active Visiting Fellows may request an extension of their Fellowship if their project is ongoing. To request renewal of your Fellowship term, please contact us (at the latest) six weeks before the agreed end date, mentioned in our confirmation.
Email a brief application (ca. 400-600 words) to the NINO Funding email address containing
- a short overview of results in your current term (not for publication in our newsletter);
- a short outline of proposed research for the renewed term;
- the application number NINO has assigned to your original VRF proposal (mentioned in confirmation).
Renewed NINO Visiting Fellowship terms are ruled by the same conditions and regulations as first-time Visiting Fellowships.
Please note:
- Visiting Fellowships are self-funded, i.e. NINO does not offer any financial compensation or expenses.
- Prospective Visiting Fellows are advised to briefly verify that relevant Dutch scholars and/or institutions will be available and inclined to cooperate during the proposed fellowship period.
- Detailed/fixed arrangements for cooperation with Dutch scholars and/or institutions should only be made if and when the fellowship application is granted.
- NINO Visiting Fellows hold a personal library account and LU-Card during their fellowship period, ensuring access to the MEL/NINO Library and all other parts of Leiden University Libraries. Practical details are arranged upon arrival. It is not necessary to arrange library access or a study place separately.
- Libraries at other Dutch universities or institutions (e.g. Rijksmuseum van Oudheden) have their own rules for access; information is found on their websites.
