NINO’s Academic Committee

The Academic Committee of the NINO Research Centre evaluates applications and submissions for NINO’s funding instruments. The Committee meets four times per year.

In addition to evaluating applications, the Committee may advise on matters of scientific policy of the NINO Research Centre.

The current members of NINO’s Academic Committee are:

Dr Shiyanthi Thavapalan (University of Amsterdam, Archaeology)
Dr Jennifer Swerida (Leiden University, Ancient Near Eastern Languages and Cultures)
Ben van den Bercken MA (Allard Pierson Museum, Egyptology)

Members are appointed by the Dean of Leiden University’s Faculty of Humanities, for a period of five years.

As staff members of the NINO Research Centre, the Director and Secretary execute the decisions taken by the Committee. They have an advisory role in the meetings, but do not vote.

The following NINO funding instruments are not ruled by the Academic Committee:

For the NINO Postdoctoral Fellowship, a dedicated selection board is installed (four members from various Dutch universities, including one advanced student);
For the NINO Thesis Prizes, a dedicated jury is installed (ca. 15 members from various Dutch universities);
Applications for NINO Visiting Research Fellowships are reviewed by the Director;
Applications for NINO Outreach Allowances are reviewed by the Director;
For the Jaarprijs Cuijpers-Opdenakker a dedicated jury is installed (5 members, representing NINO, EOL, and the prize’s namegivers).
